The holiday season can get so busy that we can often slip into autopilot and lose track of our well-being—not to mention the true spirit of the holidays. Here are a few ways to help you stay grounded and care for yourself during this time of year.
Be Intentional
When life speeds up, it’s easy to get swept along and forget what truly matters to you. At Centered Therapy Chicago, we encourage clients to pause and be intentional. Ask yourself, “Why am I doing this? Is it working for me?” Good self-care means treating yourself with compassion and staying connected to your true intentions.
Reconnect With What You Love About the Holidays
In the rush of the season, many of us push aside activities that bring us joy. Take a moment to reflect on what you want from the holidays this year. What feels important to you now? What traditions or rituals did you once love but have let go of? Is there anything you want to bring back—or something new you want to add? Choose at least one joyful activity and make space for it this season.
Practice Generosity
Research shows that feeling empathy for others activates our biological “love button”—the release of oxytocin—which helps us feel calmer and more connected. Acts of kindness such as volunteering, donating items, or offering support to elders not only help others but also reduce our own stress. Giving our time, attention, gratitude, and encouragement fosters a deep sense of connection and reminds us that we’re part of something bigger.
Practice Mindfulness
The holidays are full of beautiful sights, sounds, and flavors. Slow down enough to truly experience them. Notice the twinkling lights, the taste of seasonal treats, the music, and the cozy sensations around you. Let yourself savor these moments. This special time only comes once a year—allow yourself to take it in fully.
